Igbinedion varsity holds induction for 51 newly qualified medical doctors

Igbinedion University Okada (IUO) Edo State on Tuesday held the 19th Oath taking / induction ceremony of her newly qualified medical doctors with a charge to the inductees to uphold the ethics of the medical profession.

Speaking during the 19th Oath-taking ceremony at the University campus in Okada, Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO) Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye said the induction ceremony marks not only the culmination of years of rigorous study and dedication but also the beginning of a profound journey in the noble field of medicine.

The Vice Chancellor said the institution founded in 1999 is the first private university in Nigeria to establish a medical school.

According to him, this aligns with the university’s unwavering commitment to excellence in the production of top-grade medical professionals required to bolster the healthcare delivery system in Nigeria, which is currently in dire Straits.

Ezemonye said a total of 51 medical doctors have been found worthy in character and learning, urged the inductees to remember the Hippocratic Oath, the guiding principles that have shaped the practice of Medicine for centuries.

“The oath reminds you of your duty to preserve life, alleviate suffering, and treat all patients with compassion and respect.

“Undoubtedly, the world faces numerous healthcare challenges, ranging from emerging diseases to increasing the burden of chronic illnesses. Your skills and expertise are urgently needed to address these pressing issues. I have no doubt that you, the inductees, will rise to the occasion and contribute your quota to the health and well-being of your communities and the society at large. ” Ezemonye said.

Ezemonye expressed gratitude to staff for their dedication and commitment to educating the next generation of medical professionals as well as parents and guardians of the inductees who have played a vital role in the success of the inductees.

On his part, past president, West African College of Surgeons, Department of Surgery University of Abuja, Prof. King-David Terna, Yawe, who spoke on the topic, “Medical Practice: Nurturing and Sustaining the ethics of an ancient, noble, and learned profession in the 21st century.” admonished the inductees to nurture, sustain, and uphold the ethics of the medical profession at all times.
