The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has bemoaned the poor performance of candidates in the just-released results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The UTME results released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) showed that out of the 1,955,069 candidates who took the UTME, over 1.5 million scored less than 200.
JAMB announced that 4756 candidates scored above 320, 7658 candidates scored between 300 and 319.
Obi, on his X handle, said the candidates’ performances reflect the deep-rooted challenges in Nigeria’s education system.
The former Anambra State governor said the results indicate poor investment in the nation’s education sector.
Obi called for more investment in the nation’s education sector, saying it is the bedrock of national development.
“I have consistently said it: education is not just a social service; it is a strategic investment. It is the most critical driver of national development and the most powerful tool for lifting people out of poverty,” he said.
“We must now invest aggressively in education — at all levels — if we are serious about building a prosperous, secure, and equitable Nigeria.”
