The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for six new full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, set to begin in the 2026/2027 academic session.
This decision follows a successful Resource Assessment of the proposed courses. Dr. Benedicta Ehanire (PhD), the institution’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the approval in a statement to the media in Benin.
Among the new offerings are two specialized undergraduate programmes: Bachelor in Speech Language Therapy and Bachelor in Occupational Therapy.
These initiatives align with the efforts of the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, to develop skilled professionals in these critical areas to mitigate the shortage of experts in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Other undergraduate programmes approved are B.Sc. International Relations, B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies, B.Ed. Primary Education, B.N. Sc. Nursing Science (in collaboration with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital).
Meanwhile, the University’s Centre of Excellence in Space Science Technology and Application is to offer Masters and Ph.D Degrees in, Remote Sensing;
and Aeronautics Engineering
The Vice Chancellor of the University , Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), while appreciating the NUC for the gesture, reiterated the determination of the University of Benin to sustain its leading position as a first-rate manpower training and development hub, through its diverse and extensive academic programmes.
