A group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide on monday raised strong concerns over the rapidly deteriorating condition of Benin kingsquare, popularly called Ring Road, once a source of pride for the city.
The group, in a statement released in Benin by President Iyamu Osaro Culture, Assistant Secretary Uhunoma Ewere Lucky, and Diaspora Coordinator Monday Ohuimumwen, JP, laments the poor environmental condition of the once iconic landmark into a shadow of its former self.
The statement highlights Ring Road’s descent into an illegal motor park, an unregulated trading zone, and a refuse dump site.
The once scenic and pleasant ambiance has been replaced by offensive odors and blocked drainage systems, creating an eyesore and a public health hazard for residents and visitors alike.
The degradation is a stark contrast to Ring Road’s celebrated past as one of Benin City’s finest places.
In light of this alarming situation, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide is urgently calling on the Edo State Government, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, and the Ministry of Transportation to take immediate action.
The group emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to restore Ring Road to its former glory, ensuring its cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal for the benefit of the entire community.
The statement reads in part, “This iconic landmark, celebrated as one of the finest places in Benin City, is now an eyesore and a public health hazard.
“In light of the above, we sincerely call on the Edo State Government, Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Ministry of Transportation, Edo State Parks and Gardens Agency, Edo State Waste Management Board, and the Oredo Local Government Council to urgently swing into action to revive and restore the dignity of Ring Road.
“However, we must commend the Oredo Council Chairman, Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, for the efforts he has made towards the beautification of parts of Ring Road. Yet, a lot still needs to be done to ensure its sustainability.”The group stated.
The group called for specific interventions in the area of Decongestion, beautification,
Enforcement declared that the ” ring road is the heartbeat of Benin City. Let us not allow negligence to erase our heritage.”
