A prominent socio-cultural organization in Edo State, Owan Conscience has voiced strong concerns regarding the alleged marginalization of the Owan Nation, a significant ethnic group within the Edo North senatorial district.
The group appealed to the Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to intervene and address the perceived imbalance in the distribution of political appointments and elective offices.
The concerns follow a recent courtesy visit by Owan Conscience leaders to Governor Okpebholo at the Government House.
During the visit, the group conveyed the collective anxieties of the Owan people, who feel underrepresented in the state’s political landscape.
The organization’s leadership has since embarked on an awareness campaign, engaging with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth representatives, and women leaders across various communities in Owan West and East Local Government Areas.
Barr. Richard Ofen-imu, the chairman of Owan Conscience, addressed gatherings in Sobe, Aoma, Okpuje, Eruere, Ora, Emai, Afuze, Ihievbe, Warrake, and Ivbiaro.
He emphasized the importance of unity and collective action to address the challenges facing the Owan Nation.
Ofen-imu stated, “It is with deep concern that we observe the persistent marginalization of our people. We urge the governor to consider the Owan Nation in the distribution of resources and opportunities.”
At the well attended town hall meeting at Ihievbe in Owan East Local Government Area, Dr. Austin Osifo, a Polytechnic lecturer advocated for Oneness.
His words, “I have been an advocate of oneness. After governor Okpebholo from Edo Central, it’s now the turn of Owan Nation in Edo North. We have been relegated to the background for a long time now and we need to wake up”
At Ivbiaro,a sleepy community in Owan East,Barr.Abdul Oroh,a former member of the house of representatives, who stormed the meeting with supporters stated clearly that Owan people have capable hands to fill positions at all levels, while also condemning the rising insecurity bedevilling the country.
Also at Eruere in Owan West, the Orhe of Iuleha land decried the marginalisation of Owan nation, while calling for unity and togetherness at all times.
The group’s efforts aim to foster a greater sense of awareness and encourage active participation in advocating for the rights and interests of the Owan people.
