The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) under the leadership of her Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof.(Mrs) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu has initiated a series of events to observe the 2025 World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day.
This annual global event celebrated on October 25th aims to raise awareness and support for individuals and families affected by these conditions.
The hospital’s commemoration began on Friday, October 24th, 2025, with an informative session at the Antenatal Clinic, where expectant mothers received valuable insights into the causes, prevention strategies, and available treatments for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
UBTH Deputy Director of Nursing Services (DDNS) Omoruyi expertly facilitated the session, ensuring participants achieved a thorough grasp of these intricate health concerns.
Spina Bifida, a congenital disability, occurs when the spinal column doesn’t fully close during pregnancy. This can lead to a range of physical and neurological challenges.
The CMD commended the Nursing Department for its proactive engagement with pregnant women, emphasizing that awareness, early antenatal registration, and nutrition are vital in reducing preventable birth defects and ensuring safer motherhood.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu, alongside her management team, is dedicated to delivering optimal care and comprehensive support to those impacted by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, thereby reinforcing their steadfast commitment to maternal and child welfare.
