Troubled by the mass exodus of party members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Solomon Arenyika, has summoned an emergency meeting with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s political aides and other stakeholders.
The meeting is fixed for noon today at the PDP State Secretariat, Asaba, the state capital.
Finding shows that the Delta PDP is currently bleeding as no fewer than 5,000 members, who are disappointed and disoriented with the leadership of the party in the state, find solace in APC.
Those who had defected include Senator Ned Nwoko, former Governor James Ibori’s daughter, and a member of the House of Representatives, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, former House of Representatives, Ossai Nicolas Ossai, Great Ovedje Ogboru, and former Commissioner, Chika Ossai.
Other PDP members who threw away their umbrellas to embrace the brooms include Sam Chukwuji, Rita Daniel, Somadina Anwasia and Dr. Chris Okobah, while Chief London, Over-Do, Juan Governor, and Chika Ossai are also set to join the APC train.
They all defected to APC along with their loyal supporters, citing internal crisis as the cause.
The Guardian however gathered that their decisions to throw in the towel at “this critical time” were due to the alleged humongous amount being paid monthly by the Oborevwori-led administration, saying they were not carried along in the scheme of things.
The defectors also accused the governor of high-handedness. They noted that some of the governor’s henchmen, particularly those who worked for his election in 2023, are on the verge of leaving the party also, hence the emergency meeting to address the issue.
