Despite Lagos boasting a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $259 billion, the daily realities of many residents tell a different story, former Labour Party gubernatorial candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has said.
During the launch of Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) 2025 on Wednesday, it was announced that Lagos’ GDP had reached $259 billion based on purchasing power parity (PPP), making the state the second-largest economy in Africa, behind Cairo, the Egyptian capital.
However, reacting yesterday, Rhodes-Vivour criticised the state government for failing to translate economic growth into improved living conditions. He pointed to crumbling infrastructure, skyrocketing rents, and inadequate public services as evidence that many aren’t benefiting from Lagos economic success.
MEANWHILE, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran aka Jandor, on Monday visited the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he met with President Bola Tinubu.
The meeting was not disclosed by Presidency officials, but sources said the private visit took place between 2pm and 4pm. Recall that on March 4, Jandor announced his resignation from PDP, citing persistent anti-party activities, internal sabotage, and lack of discipline in the party.
At a recent media briefing in Lagos, he alleged that some party leaders saw his candidacy as a threat to their interest and worked against him, citing instances of attacks on his campaign and condemnation from party leaders.
He accused the State Chairman of the party, Philip Aivoji, of allegedly issuing a false statement on all PDP platforms, claiming that he (Jandor) had withdrawn from the election.
Jandor also accused Olabode George, a leader of the party in Lagos State, of openly declaring support for the gubernatorial candidate of another party and advising Lagos residents not to vote for the PDP.
